Media Blog Reflection

Image
I consume a shockingly large amount of media every day. From television to my phone I feel as if it is almost impossible to escape the clutches of media. My phone, essentially a mini computer, is never more than 20 feet away from me, and with the advertisements and social media on my device I never part from being bombarded by the media. However by no means am I attempting to pawn off the responsibility of being a responsible consumer on the idea that I just can not control it. Because I can, and I willingly engage in thousands of media campaigns daily. This was true prior to this assignment and it has stayed the same afterwards, however I am much more aware of the lies media portrays to us. I am now hyper aware of the media and techniques used around me. This I believe was heightened after analyzing so many pieces of media both within my blogs, but also in class. I now understand all of the many needs and techniques advertisers use in order to entice the cons...

The Tiki Room

Image
Over winter break my family and I went to Disneyland. This is an annual tradition that we have been doing since I can remember, but what I don't remember is just how offensive and inaccurate one of the most popular attractions is, The Tiki Room. This exhibit is where you go inside and all of these robotic birds and tiki statues sing to you, it is entertaining and has a catchy song. It is supposedly set in Hawaii however there is no distinctions within the attraction from which I could determine that it was supposed to take place in Hawaii.       In terms of the characters within the ride they are all different birds from different areas of the world. However, all of them except for one, are from different European countries. Last time I checked there was not a major European presence throughout Hawaii in terms of population. All of the birds had names life Pierre who was from France or Andres who was from Germany. The only exception to this mainly Eu...

Missrepresentation and Mismanagement in media

Image
The documentary, Missrepresentation, was fascinating in many ways, however what I took away most from this documentary is the negative effects it had on men. This may sound counter intuitive as this documentary is literally informing the public about the flaws in media around the representation of women, however it speaks volumes about the men in our society. One scholar stated, "You can't be what you can't see." This is especially applicable for young girls looking for role models in the media, ones that are strong and in positions of power, without being hyper sexualized. However, as they briefly touch on in the documentary, how does the lack of representation of respectful men in the media affect society?         If there is not representation of men who are respectful, kind, responsible, good fathers, etc how do we expect the next generation of young men to develop into individuals with these characterist...

Delta Airlines

Image
After traveling for six plus hours the last thing I wanted to do was analyze advertisements, but that is exactly what I did. While walking through the tunnel to get on the last plane the walls were plastered with little slogans and pictures showing the customers how amazing the airline really was. All of the pictures showed men and women smiling and enjoying the picture perfect flight that they were apparently on. All were being served amazing food and staying connected with complimentary WiFi. Because of my exhaustion and overall bad mood I was lured in by these advertisements and wished with all of my heart that this Delta flight would be as heavenly as pictured. Sadly I was mistaken, the plane was still crowded, with no WiFi, bad peanuts, and the occasional glass of water. However before entering the plane to see the reality of our situation those advertisements had completely convinced me that Delta airlines was ahead of the times and overall amazing.   ...

Bratz dolls

The character of the midriff, created by the media can still be seen throughout the world today. The character of the midriff is a young girl who is prematurely adolescent, obsessed with her looks, and portrays herself as an individual who's only asset is her body. This kind of girl is constantly portrayed across the media and has undoubtedly shaped the minds and actions of young girls today. It is a kind of "feed back loop" where the media broadcasts certain girls who fit the midriff's description and in turn the girls who see this media are influenced by their actions.       The aspect of being prematurely adolescent is highlighted in a cartoon television program that was very popular around 2005-2008 and targeted towards girls around the ages of 9-12.  Throughout the entire show the characters are seen partying, sneaking out, dressing a little more on the revealing side, and overall acting dumb. These characters intellects were never highlig...

The perfect billboard, celebrities

Image
The ultimate form of advertising is possibly where we would least expect it, the red carpet. At events attended by Hollywood elite no one would expect what really goes on behind the scenes is not all glamorous, but mostly strategic. Celebrities are essentially the perfect walking billboards, because every time they are asked, "who are you wearing?" the whole world waits with baited breath to know. And once that answer has been given everyone tuning in to the Grammy's, Tony's, or Golden Globes, will hear the brand that their favorite celebrity has supposedly chosen.        The reason this kind of advertising is so successful is because almost every average person strives to be extraordinary like some celebrity icon that everyone has. Therefore, when we find out what kind of clothes or brand our idol has chosen we naturally project our love for the individual onto the brand itself. What this results in is us as consumers deciding we need ...

The Good Place

Image
The Good Place is an amazing show that defies many stereotypes and as a result send positive messages to many different demographics. To begin with the cast as a whole is incredibly diverse as the main characters consist of someone who is Asian, white, African, and Indian. In addition to the core group the situations each character is put in is full of different kinds of people in terms of race, sexuality, and personality. These aspects culminate to send an incredibly effective, entertaining, and positive message.           The creator of The Good Place is a man by the name Micheal Schur. Micheal Schur has created Parks and Rec, The Office, and The Good Place, so clearly he is an expert in the field of smash hit comedies. However reflecting back on the comedies he has done before a very common theme is the overall lack of diversity. Although this in part could be equated to the times the shows were produced the two other come...
