Media Blog Reflection

Image
I consume a shockingly large amount of media every day. From television to my phone I feel as if it is almost impossible to escape the clutches of media. My phone, essentially a mini computer, is never more than 20 feet away from me, and with the advertisements and social media on my device I never part from being bombarded by the media. However by no means am I attempting to pawn off the responsibility of being a responsible consumer on the idea that I just can not control it. Because I can, and I willingly engage in thousands of media campaigns daily. This was true prior to this assignment and it has stayed the same afterwards, however I am much more aware of the lies media portrays to us. I am now hyper aware of the media and techniques used around me. This I believe was heightened after analyzing so many pieces of media both within my blogs, but also in class. I now understand all of the many needs and techniques advertisers use in order to entice the cons...

The Tiki Room

Image
Over winter break my family and I went to Disneyland. This is an annual tradition that we have been doing since I can remember, but what I don't remember is just how offensive and inaccurate one of the most popular attractions is, The Tiki Room. This exhibit is where you go inside and all of these robotic birds and tiki statues sing to you, it is entertaining and has a catchy song. It is supposedly set in Hawaii however there is no distinctions within the attraction from which I could determine that it was supposed to take place in Hawaii.       In terms of the characters within the ride they are all different birds from different areas of the world. However, all of them except for one, are from different European countries. Last time I checked there was not a major European presence throughout Hawaii in terms of population. All of the birds had names life Pierre who was from France or Andres who was from Germany. The only exception to this mainly Eu...

Missrepresentation and Mismanagement in media

Image
The documentary, Missrepresentation, was fascinating in many ways, however what I took away most from this documentary is the negative effects it had on men. This may sound counter intuitive as this documentary is literally informing the public about the flaws in media around the representation of women, however it speaks volumes about the men in our society. One scholar stated, "You can't be what you can't see." This is especially applicable for young girls looking for role models in the media, ones that are strong and in positions of power, without being hyper sexualized. However, as they briefly touch on in the documentary, how does the lack of representation of respectful men in the media affect society?         If there is not representation of men who are respectful, kind, responsible, good fathers, etc how do we expect the next generation of young men to develop into individuals with these characterist...
